Fuck, I know I’m going to piss people off with this, but really I have to say something. I just read something that said something along the lines of “freedom doesn’t come free is just an expression white people came up with to have an excuse to kill people.”

I’m going to have to say fuck that.

I’m not denying the past of western imperialism or the atrocities committed by people who were white, but to say that we were all free in every context of the word until white people came along or until some government came along is complete and utter bullshit.

I wouldn’t be so cynical about that phrase if it hadn’t been flogged to death as justification for mindless cock-sucking of the military-industrial complex, the justification for unnecessary warfare, and to place soldiers on a pedestal.

Teacher: Today we will be talking about the Soviet Union. Does anyone know what kind of government the Soviet Union had?

Students: *Silence*

Teacher: It was communism. Does anyone here know what communism is?

Students: *Silence*

Teacher: Its a form of government where one person controls everything.

So…

Why did you stay quiet instead of speaking up, if you knew the legit answers to any of those questions?

Hey signal boost for these guys. They need more fans. <3

Some additional info, unless you go to their site:

Rabbit (1890s-1900s Steampunk) is the lead singer, and the normally silly with a side of crazy but is melancholy here with the non-functional umbrella.

The Spine (1940s-1960s Futurism) is the tall silver bass, and is probably the best pantomime in the group I think… :3

The John (1920s - 1930s Art Deco)  (not like the toilet and more like the adorable) is the long curly-haired suspender-clad top-hat boo boo uguu duu duu… *ahem* Yeah that guy.

These guys are musical mime street performers turned musical artists who live and perform in California. They tour a little bit and sell CDs. I want them to come to Erie really badly.

MORE ROBOT BANDS

oh good I was hoping this’d cross my dash again

I admit, I’m not terribly fond of steampunk, but they’re not ALL steampunk (deco and retro futurism!) and also just

bands full of attractive men who dress up like robots, yes good.

Rabbit is a pretty cool dude. He was my guild leader for a while when I played WoW.

I know there was a woman who did this with them, or at least there was back when he was showing off his videos. I wonder what happened to her.

This is a fic I wrote a while ago about the potential future for dragons in the world of Naomi Novik’s Temeraire book series. Decided to repost it here since I’ve nothing better to do.  Titled “Human Progress” and is seen from the point of view of a dragon.  Rated PGish due to war, blood, maiming, death and so forth.  Nothing too serious though.

Humans were far too clever.

So, just a question then.  Why do you get to decide it is morally wrong for people to respond with anger when they are continually treated like lesser people for the mere act of being by a system that refuses to acknowledge their suffering and mistreatment without being dragged kicking and screaming and protesting about how racism is over into the limelight?

You say it’s not all whites but how many white people say “I’m colorblind, I don’t see color, just people!” or “I don’t hate x group but…” or “That black guy who got killed might have at one time been engaged in criminal activity, so it legitimizes his death.” Or any number of small things that go unnoticed and unchallenged because people don’t want to cause a scene or it isn’t a big deal?   It is not prejudice when it is reflecting the reality of what people of color experience every day. And that reality is a systematic oppression of people of color by white people. It’s not an obvious or overt oppression like apartheid. It’s a subtle one that is propped up by stereotypes, mild condescending words, and meaningless talk about post-racial America.

Regarding Trayvon Martin & The Rue/Alamanda Stenberg controversy…

I am seeing many comments from people who do not Indentify as white saying “White people this” and “White people that”.

As if the…

I don’t think you really understand where people of color come from on this, man.  People of color are made to feel excluded, looked down upon, different, inferior, as criminals.  They have to prove that they are innocent anew every day when someone reacts to the approach of a black man by crossing the street.  They have to go out of their way to be disarming, to be deferential and polite and bow and scrape just to ensure that they aren’t assumed to be criminals.  Black and brown people are routinely pulled over, arrested, beaten, killed because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

So put yourself in that position, try to understand how it’s understandable to feel anger and resentment towards the people who don’t have to deal with that and who are the ones who help perpetrate that sort of attitude.  That these same people claim that we live in a post-racial society that there is no more racism in the United States of America because a black man is president.  They claim that because the civil rights era was 40 years ago, we no longer have to worry  about racism.

It’s still here. It’s still affecting us.  It’s still relevant.  That is why we are angry, upset, distressed.  That’s why we say white people oppress us.  That is why we don’t like white people who get on their high horse and talk about how wrong it is to stereotype people. But only once it is white people who are stereotyped.  When all blacks are shiftless, jobless, thugs on welfare, no one cares.  When all Latinos are wetback illegal immigrants who come here to steal jobs from hardworking white Americans, no one speaks up.  When all Arabs are religious fundamentalists who want to destroy the Western way of life, no one bats an eyelash.

But as soon as we say that we are oppressed by white people, a shitstorm of equivocation, excuses, and denial rains down us because no, no white person would ever dream of oppressing people and how dare someone suggest such a thing.

That’s not how it works, though.  By saying you don’t see color or that skin color should just be a descriptor, etc. you are marginalizing PoC who experience inequality, fear, distrust, and hatred every day simply because of the color of their skin.   You individually do not oppress anyone, but the system, run mostly by white people for white people, continues to do so.

stfuconservatives:

In the continuing series of “surprisingly honest and even feminist stuff on Cracked.com” articles, author David Wong looks at the main reasons men hate and resent women. He argues that a mix of social conditioning and genetics make men paranoid about women’s ulterior motives AND leads them to believe women owe them something just for existing.

Like I said, surprisingly honest stuff. Although I’m having a *little* trouble taking this article seriously when this is the ad running beneath it:

GUYS. COME ON GUYS.

-Jess

I was (mostly) with him until the last one.  At the same time, I know what it’s like. Sometimes I feel like I have to consciously instruct myself not to look at a woman’s chest or just focus elsewhere on purpose while I’m talking to them.  It creeps me out because I feel like I don’t have any self control.  It’s not women’s fault, and I’m not really sure it’s my own fault.  But it makes me unhappy because I want to be able to just have a conversation with these women that are my friends and who I don’t really have a sexual interest but I spend half the time worrying about whether I’m staring or if I’m making too much eye contact.

I’m not sure if this is something that happens to all men or if I’m just particularly socially awkward, but in a nutshell, I kind of agree with what he’s saying but at the same time part of me wants to believe that men are not all panting animals who have no willpower to restrain themselves. Human sexuality is a pain in the ass.
